The sardinal Sa Rata, a century-old wooden boat, was built by master shipwright Bonaventura Colomines in 1926. This emblematic piece of Catalan Latin sailing, which has sailed continuously for a century, was restored at Drassanes Sala in l'Escala by master shipwright Salvador Feliu in 1989.
This Saturday's gathering, organized by the Club Nàutic l'Escala, the Amics de la Vela Llatina de l'Escala association, and the Museu de l'Anxova i de la Sal, will feature eighteen Latin sail boats from all over Catalonia. These boats will perform tribute laps around Sa Rata, which will be positioned between Roca del Cargol and Punta de l'Escala.
“"It will be a spectacle to see all these boats sailing and paying homage to a sailing tradition, so popular throughout the Mediterranean coast, formerly as a mode of transport and fishing, and currently as leisure and historical and intangible heritage."
In addition to the centenary celebration, a video of the sails navigating will be recorded to create a documentary promoting the art of Latin sailing. Concurrently, l'Escala will host the first International Symposium of the Phocaean Route from May 8 to 10, as part of the Mediterranean Triumvirate events. This gathering will bring together representatives and specialists from various Mediterranean cities with historical ties to Phocaea, to discuss cultural connections and the Phocaean legacy.
