The TEA Alt Empordà association, in collaboration with the L'Escala City Council, has launched a pilot program of assisted dog therapy for children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The initiative, already successfully implemented in other towns like Figueres and Llançà, aims to provide new therapeutic tools to the region. The project's presentation took place at the L'Escala Auditorium, where the benefits of this methodology were explained, including improvements in communication, social skills, emotional regulation, and personal autonomy.
Eloi Bordas, a professional from the Centre for Assisted Therapies with Dogs (CTAC), detailed the therapy's specifics. The event saw a large turnout and a very positive response from families, who appreciate having a specialized resource nearby.
According to sources from the TEA Alt Empordà association, the interest shown could lead to the establishment of a permanent program. "If the interest is sustained and families continue to find the proposal suitable for their needs, we plan to launch a continuous assisted dog therapy program starting in September to serve the ASD community in L'Escala and surrounding areas," explained the association's president.
The L'Escala City Council supports the project, aiming to expand therapeutic resources and strengthen inclusion policies. The Councilor for Social Action emphasized the importance of undertaking initiatives that address specific needs and foster a more inclusive municipality.
A free introductory session is scheduled for June 25th at the Xalem civic center, followed by a five-session pilot program in July for 17 euros. From September onwards, the monthly fee for association members will range between 25 and 40 euros, significantly lower than the actual cost of 85 euros.
The dog acts as a motivator and facilitator, encouraging interaction and the formation of positive bonds, which helps achieve therapeutic goals more naturally and effectively. This type of therapy has proven effective in improving various areas for children and adolescents with ASD.
