Maria Asunción Alberch's journey is a testament to pursuing dreams at any age. While she had always been an active runner in local races in Figueres and Banyoles, she only joined the Associació Atlètica Figueres and started federated competitions after turning seventy.
Her recent achievements include a record in the 3,000-meter indoor race walk with a time of 22 minutes and 17 seconds. Just seven days later, she set another record in the 5,000-meter road race walk, finishing in 35 minutes and 47 seconds.
“"Athletics had been the dream of my whole life and I couldn't make it come true until I was seventy."
Under the guidance of coach Augusto Godínez, she trains five days a week. Beyond race walking, she also competes in 100 and 200-meter sprints, often sharing the track with her daughter, who is also a competitive athlete.
