The Roses City Council has begun testing an artificial intelligence system, named LAIF, at Santa Margarida beach to detect drownings and improve lifeguard response times.

Santa Margarida beach in Roses is hosting an August pilot test of an artificial intelligence system designed to detect drowning risks. If successful, the technology may be extended to other urban beaches in the municipality.
The system, called LAIF and developed by Pro-activa Serveis Aquàtics, uses cameras to analyze water activity in real-time. Artificial intelligence identifies potential dangers without recording images, sending immediate alerts to surveillance stations to notify lifeguards.
This technology, co-developed with the CIMNE's Technology Transfer and Innovation Group (linked to the UPC), aims to supplement lifeguards' work and help detect health complications in the water that are not easily visible.
Lluís Espada, the Councilor for Environment and Beaches in Roses, emphasized that the system supports professionals by leveraging technological advancements. The trial is taking place at Santa Margarida beach until the end of September.
The Blanes City Council has also announced the implementation of a similar system at S’Abanell beach, near the mouth of the Tordera river, to bolster safety and prevent drownings.
