The church of Santa Maria de Palau, located in Sant Llorenç de la Muga, is a prime example of rural Romanesque architecture in the Alt Empordà region, known for its historical significance.

Protected as a Local Cultural Heritage Site, the building features a single nave with a pointed vault and a semicircular apse. A unique architectural detail is the almond-shaped roof over the presbytery, which is uncommon for the period and region.
The main facade displays a simple yet expressive portal with two receding rounded arches. On the western side, a bell-gable with three pillars rises above the structure, built with finely worked stone blocks that showcase medieval craftsmanship.
Historical records of the site date back to 972. By the end of the 14th century, although it was not a parish church, Santa Maria de Palau was significant enough to have its own dedicated priest.
