Heavy rains and strong waves have created a powerful countercurrent phenomenon at the mouths of the Muga and Fluvià rivers in the Alt Empordà region during the recent storm.

The meeting of high river flows and eastern sea storms has produced dramatic scenes in Empuriabrava and Sant Pere Pescador. This natural process occurs as freshwater hits the sea's wave barrier, creating turbulent whirlpools and shifting sandbars along the coast.
The Muga river flow was further increased by water releases from the Darnius-Boadella reservoir, which reached 97% capacity. While beneficial for marine nutrients, authorities warn of the danger posed by these unpredictable currents and water force.
