The municipality of Lladó (Alt Empordà) said goodbye this Saturday to Josep Caixàs Escura, who served as mayor for 24 years (1979-2003) and was the driving force behind the renowned Cheese Fair.

The farewell ceremony took place at the parish church of Santa Maria de Lladó, following Caixàs' death last Thursday at the age of 93. A tailor by profession and a well-known figure in the Alt Empordà region, he led the winning candidacy in the first democratic municipal elections after the Franco dictatorship in 1979.
During his long tenure, Caixàs was noted for his negotiating skills, which allowed him to solve critical deficiencies in the town, such as the water supply. He also worked to enhance the rich architectural heritage, particularly the collegiate church of Santa Maria.

"If you don't have a person next to you who understands and comprehends you, the easiest thing is to give up. Thanks to her, we have arrived here."

One of his most significant legacies is the creation of the Fira del Formatge de Lladó (Lladó Cheese Fair), established in 1996. Caixàs insisted that the event focus on local products and artisan cheesemakers, distinguishing it from general product fairs held elsewhere.
Politically affiliated with CiU, Caixàs also held a seat at the inception of the Alt Empordà Regional Council. In August 2003, after being succeeded by Carles Ramonet, he received a surprise tribute from his neighbors and party colleagues, attended by over three hundred people.
