Esperança Corcoll and her grandson, Joan Sàlvia, discovered a large illegal landfill on their family land in Palau-saverdera, located in the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, while attempting to plant olive trees.

The family was attempting to reclaim the land inherited from their great-grandfather for an agricultural project that included planting about 200 olive trees. The surprise came when they realized that what looked like a grass-covered hill was, in fact, a massive mound of garbage.

"It is incredibly sad, there is only filth everywhere, it is frustrating."

The mayor of Palau-saverdera, Miquel Serra, explained that although they are not aware of any active landfill in the area, between the 60s and 2000, all kinds of waste were dumped there, including rubble, old cars, and pipes.
Due to the wide variety of waste that could be found during those decades, the site was popularly known in the town as 'El Corte Inglés' (a major Spanish department store), because, according to the mayor, “you could find everything there”.
