The United Nations warned on Monday that the United States' action to capture President Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela contravenes the UN Charter and international law.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his "deep concern" regarding the legality of Washington's maneuver, which occurred two days ago, aimed at removing the Venezuelan leader from power. The statement was read during an urgent Security Council session by Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo.

"I have constantly stressed the imperative need for all to fully respect International Law, including the Charter of the United Nations, which constitutes the basis for the maintenance of international peace and security."

The organization recalls that its founding charter enshrines "the prohibition of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State," and insists on the importance of adhering to the "force of law" given the "confusing and complex" situation in Venezuela.
Guterres also made an urgent call for internal dialogue to facilitate a transition towards a new government and prevent a conflict escalation. In line with this, the European Commission also requested a "democratic transition" led by the people, which must include opposition leaders Edmundo González and María Corina Machado.
