The humid and rainy weather over the weekend did not prevent volunteers from preparing the pile with native wood, following the expertise of Met Cufí. After several hours of work, the charcoal kiln began to smoke on Sunday, January 18, awaiting the completion of the slow combustion process.
This tradition, promoted by the Local Football Club, includes a popular calçotada (barbecue) next to the pile on Saturday, January 24. The collection of the resulting charcoal, essential for the fair, will take place later, specifically on February 7.
The resulting material, naturally created for lighting fireplaces and cooking, will be the protagonist of the 26th Sant Llorenç de la Muga Carbon Fair, scheduled for Sunday, March 1. The event is supported by the City Council and champions one of the traditional trades of the Alt Empordà and Alta Garrotxa regions.
Historically, the fair was initially centered on the bean (mongeta), but it evolved towards charcoal due to the progressive loss of the cultivation of this legume. Visitors to the festival will be able to buy bags of vegetable charcoal, in addition to tasting dishes and enjoying various activities and stalls.
