The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned about the arrival of an Atlantic “storm train” that will cause persistent precipitation, very intense wind gusts, and a notable maritime storm across much of the Iberian Peninsula. Although the most affected areas will be the west and south of the peninsula, significant impacts are also expected in various parts of the Mediterranean and in Catalonia.
“"It will be a very rainy week across much of the Peninsula, with accumulations that could be very significant and which, in some cases, could cause rivers to swell and even lead to flooding."
The first storm, named Joseph, will arrive this Monday, bringing widespread rain and strong winds. In Catalonia, yellow and orange level warnings have been activated in a dozen regions due to gusts that could exceed 72 kilometers per hour. The storm will be particularly severe on the coast of Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea, where waves over six meters are expected.
Instability will continue through Tuesday and Wednesday with the arrival of new humid fronts. In Catalonia, scattered rains and very strong wind gusts are expected, especially along the coast. Furthermore, a notable thermal drop is forecast towards the middle of the week, with the snow level falling to between 800 and 1,200 meters initially, and even between 500 and 800 meters in some areas.
This temperature drop will be accompanied by episodes of rough seas on the Catalan coast, with waves that could exceed 2.5 meters in height from the Maresme to the Ebro Delta. Given this scenario of adverse weather, meteorological organizations recommend exercising extreme caution and regularly consulting weather warnings.
