The collapse of the wall, located near a Rodalies train line, caused the death of young trainee driver Fernando Huerta and left 40 injured, five of them seriously. The slope, which fell onto the convoy, has become the central element of the police investigation, which hypothesizes that it gave way just as the train was passing at 60 km/h.
“"It will be the State Road Network that assumes the repair of the retaining wall that collapsed in Gelida, despite not having enough information regarding its ownership."
The ownership of the wall remains a major unknown, as it was built parallel to the AP-7 highway but sits between the fast lane and the R4 railway line. Minister Puente stated that he hoped to clarify responsibility, whether belonging to Rodalies or the State Road Network, “as soon as possible.”
The instability of the terrain complicates both the removal of the train by Adif and Renfe teams and the expert assessment work. This situation has forced the closure of the AP-7 southbound between Martorell and Vilafranca del Penedès, affecting the traffic of 120,000 vehicles daily, according to Ramon Lamiel, director of the Catalan Traffic Service.
