The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, confirmed yesterday Wednesday, January 21, 2026 on TVE that the retaining wall partially impacted the train cabin in Gelida, announcing the total suspension of the service throughout the day.

The head of Transport stressed that the machinist's possibility of avoiding the accident was “null,” confirming that the tragedy is directly related to the adverse “meteorological conditions” affecting the Alt Penedès area.

"In principle, throughout today with total certainty."

Puente added an important detail regarding the incident's circumstances. Despite the severity of the situation, he highlighted that, fortunately, the speed limit on that section of the track was set at 60 km/h, much lower than the usual 140 km/h, due to previous construction works.
This speed reduction may have been crucial in mitigating the impact of the accident, which caused the partial collapse of the retaining wall onto the train cabin. The interruption of the Rodalies service affects the entire Catalan network while assessment and repair work is carried out in the Gelida area.
