The entire Rodalies service in Catalonia was suspended this Wednesday, January 21, until Adif verifies the infrastructure's safety following the storm and the fatal accident in Gelida.

The decision to suspend the entire network was made after an R4 line train crashed into a fallen wall on the track in Gelida (Alt Penedès) on Tuesday afternoon. The incident resulted in the death of a trainee driver who was traveling in the cabin and left a total of 37 injured, five of them seriously.

"The main priority is to review the entire infrastructure before resuming service with full safety guarantees."

Albert Dalmau · Acting President's Minister
The suspension has generated great confusion and long queues at bus and train stations, especially in Tarragona and Sants (Barcelona), where many regular users were unaware of the situation. Given the road collapse, the Department of Territory lifted the toll barriers on the C-32, at the Garraf tunnels, to facilitate circulation towards Barcelona.
In parallel, the drivers' union Semaf has announced the call for a “general strike across the entire sector” and warned that the service “will not be provided without sufficient safety guarantees.” Politically, Junts has requested the urgent appearance of Minister Sílvia Paneque in the Parliament and Minister Óscar Puente in the Congress due to the “poor management of the railway crisis.”
