The Rodalies de Catalunya service was completely halted after two incidents registered last Tuesday. The first occurred at 8:20 PM between Tordera and Maçanet, where a stone falling onto the track caused the derailment of an axle. The ten passengers on board were unharmed.
The second and more serious incident took place at 10:00 PM on the R4 line, between Gelida and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, located in the Alt Penedès region. In this case, a retaining wall collapsed onto the infrastructure, likely due to wear from recent heavy rains, striking a passing train.
This tragedy resulted in one fatality—the 27-year-old trainee driver—and 37 injuries, five of which are serious. Following the events, Adif decided to suspend all rail traffic across the Catalan network to ensure infrastructure safety.
“"All members of Semaf are devastated and consider this situation of constant deterioration of the railway inadmissible."
The Spanish Union of Railway Engineers (Semaf) has called for a general strike, although dates have not yet been specified. Due to the paralysis, the Generalitat de Catalunya has urged citizens to seek public transport alternatives and has made the website Mou-te amb transport públic available to check service status and mobility options.
