The Generalitat Firefighters warned this Wednesday of "possible instability" on the AP-7 highway in Gelida (Alt Penedès), in the section affected by the retaining wall collapse that caused Tuesday's train accident.

The accident occurred when a retaining wall from the highway fell onto the railway track, causing the train crash. Currently, the lane of the AP-7 closest to the wall is closed, although the rest of the road is considered "suitable for traffic," according to the Firefighters.

"The collapsed wall is currently resting on the crashed train, and it will be necessary to assess how this slope behaves once the carriage is removed."

The Firefighters have requested a "joint evaluation" of the situation from the Ministry of Transport and the railway administrator ADIF, especially considering the high volume of heavy vehicle traffic concentrated on this section of the AP-7. The total safety of the road can only be determined once the train has been removed.
In parallel, the Mossos d’Esquadra have initiated an investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident. The head of the Mossos in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Eduard Baca, indicated that the testimonies of the train drivers will be key to finding out whether the wall fell before or as a consequence of the train passing.
