For the past ten days, the journey between Barcelona and Gelida, which usually takes about 40 minutes, has been extended to nearly three hours due to the transport crisis.
The R4 train accident in Gelida and the closure of the AP-7 highway between Martorell and Sant Sadurní have left the town's 7,000 residents in a critical mobility situation, as the alternative transport provided by Renfe is also affected by road congestion.
“"I have two children, I cannot leave late and not know when I will get home and then return to Barcelona the next day."
Facing this situation, Anna Espinach chose to sleep in the Catalan capital until the situation improves, a decision shared by Marta, who left Gelida to stay in Barcelona during the week.
Mireia Cartró, who works in Sabadell, has seen her travel time triple, taking up to an hour and a half to return home due to congestion at the Martorell exit, while Marta Rius, who commutes to Vilafranca del Penedès, warns of the danger on secondary roads.
The AP-7 closure resulted in an 11.6% increase in traffic on the C-31 south and C-32 south, according to data from the ACN. Traffic also rose on the C-17 (10%), the C-58 (3.5%), the C-33 (5.5%), and the A-2 (4.4%).
