The University of Barcelona, in collaboration with institutions from Alt Penedès and Garraf, launched the UB Chair for Health and Castells to promote interdisciplinary research into the physical and emotional well-being of 'castellers'.

The UB Chair for Health and Castells is the result of an alliance between the University of Barcelona (UB), the Fundació Pinnae, the Consorci Sanitari de l’Alt Penedès i el Garraf, and the Castellers de Vilafranca. The main goal is to generate scientific knowledge to develop innovative strategies for injury prevention and performance enhancement during human tower activities.

"They are a form of social cohesion, collective learning, transmission of values, and shared experience. The objective is to put knowledge, research, and innovation at the service of the 'castellera' community."

Susana Jiménez · Director of the Chair
The chair will provide a holistic and interdisciplinary vision, integrating biomedical research, social sciences, psychology, artificial intelligence, and training in a pioneering way. Planned actions include detecting physical and emotional needs, promoting research lines on lifestyle, and creating educational materials.
In the field of innovation, efforts will focus on incorporating technologies such as virtual reality simulators, sensors, and data analysis tools to improve safety and performance during rehearsals. Furthermore, protocols for action in case of injuries or falls will be implemented, and an advisory service for the teams will be established.

"Let's make this chair, by itself, a 'castell': solid in its foundations, audacious in height, and exemplary in the 'pinya'."
