The nineteenth edition of Vijazz, set to take place in Vilafranca del Penedès, has announced its main program. The event, organized by the Acadèmia Tastavins Penedès, continues its tradition of combining international jazz with local wine culture.
The official presentation was held at Espai Penedès in Barcelona. The festival will consolidate its wine and cava fair on Rambla Sant Francesc, featuring a marquee spanning over 1,200 square meters. This space will host more than 300 references of DO Penedès wines and sparkling wines from DO Cava, Corpinnat, and Clàssic Penedès, alongside gastronomic offerings and live music.
The Main Stage Jaume I, nestled between medieval palaces and the gothic church of Santa Maria, will be the musical heart. On Friday, July 3, the British funk and soul band Incognito, led by Jean-Paul 'Bluey' and Paul Williams, will open the concerts. Saturday, July 4, will feature London-based saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia, who will blend jazz with classical, R&B, and dubstep elements. Finally, on Sunday, July 5, American bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding will present her jazz rooted in indigenous traditions.
“"The goal of Vijazz is to champion live performances by artists who define the avant-garde of jazz worldwide. These musicians play with the jazz style, bringing new interpretations without abandoning its essence."
Other notable artists on the main stage include Cuban pianist Harold López-Nussa and American saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin. Since 2007, Vijazz concerts have been free, with a 1,200-seat grandstand accessible with the purchase of a wine tasting ticket, and a free 'pelouse' area for over 1,000 people.
The Gothic Cloister of Sant Francesc will host the 'Elles i el Jazz' series, featuring performances by Estefane Santos Quintet, Camarada Ventura, and Marta Garrett. Additional activities include the 'Nous Talents' series in collaboration with ESMUC, and Enojazz with saxophonist Perico Sambeat. The Councillor for Tourism, Education, and Sports, Gemma Romeu, highlighted the festival's economic and cultural impact, attracting thousands of visitors and marking the start of summer in the Penedès region.
