Technology teacher Pau Carbonell is organizing the Vilafranca Open 2026, an official Rubik's Cube competition that will bring together 60 participants at La Nau on February 28.

The event, promoted by the organizer and the Associació Catalana de Speedcubing, will host 60 enthusiasts competing in the 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, and 5x5 categories. Interest was so high that spots filled up in just 3 hours, with twenty people already on the waiting list to participate.

"The trick to doing the Rubik's cube? Lots of practice, repetition, and patience."

Carbonell, a computer scientist by training and a teacher at the Institut de la Girada in Vilafranca del Penedès, emphasizes that the hobby has never died but has modernized. He explains that current cubes are very different from those of the 80s, and learning is now much more self-taught thanks to online tutorials, boosting concentration.
All events are supervised by the World Cube Association (WCA), which ensures fair conditions. Participants compete against themselves, aiming to lower their execution times. The organizer notes that while the world record for the 5x5 is 40 seconds, in Catalonia, achieving under 40 seconds in a 4x4 is already considered “spectacular.”
