Agents of the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Guardia Civil are conducting a search at the IRTA-CReSA laboratory in Cerdanyola del Vallès this Thursday, investigating the potential leak of the African Swine Fever virus.

The police operation, ordered by the Cerdanyola del Vallès Court of Instruction number 2, is part of preliminary proceedings declared secret. The judiciary is investigating a possible crime against the environment following the outbreak detected in wild boars in Collserola at the end of last November.
The IRTA-CReSA center (Animal Health Research Center) has been under suspicion since the first infected wild boars appeared near its facilities. Suspicions grew upon learning that the laboratory experimented with the Georgia 2007 virus strain, commonly used in experimental studies and vaccine evaluation.

"With the data we know today, it is my obligation to address this Chamber: today nothing allows us to conclude that the virus comes from the facilities of the laboratories or centers working with this virus. As of today, this is the information we have."

Salvador Illa · President of the Generalitat
This judicial investigation runs parallel to the audit commissioned by the Generalitat to review animal health research centers located within a 20-kilometer radius of the affected area. The Ministry of Agriculture already suggested the hypothesis of a leak from the laboratories on December 5.

"Prudence, let's not draw hasty conclusions. There are different lines of work and all possibilities of origin are open."

Òscar Ordeig · Minister of Agriculture
