Integra Pirineus has initiated a sustainable forest management operation in Coma de Mur, within the municipality of Coll de Nargó, aiming to reduce fire risk and improve forest resilience.

The initiative focuses on the areas of Barranc de l’Obaga Negra and els Prats, public lands belonging to the Coll de Nargó Town Hall and included in the Natura 2000 Network. The area suffers from a high density of trees and undergrowth, making it highly susceptible to forest fires.
A surface of 6.20 hectares will be treated to reduce the vertical and horizontal continuity of vegetation fuel, thereby creating more open and fire-resistant spaces. Tasks include clearing brush with manual brush cutters and selective thinning with chainsaws to reduce pine density.
The resulting timber will be processed and transported by forest tractor, while vegetation debris will be managed through chipping or manual equipment in difficult-to-access areas. According to Integra Pirineus, this methodology not only reduces vegetation fuel but also creates open areas that act as natural firebreaks and improves soil fertility.
Additionally, the project aims to restore former pasture areas now overgrown with shrubs. This opening will facilitate the return of extensive livestock farming and the feeding of wild herbivores, thereby increasing the area's biodiversity.
This project is supported by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Barcelona and the EASA-European Association of Social Anthropologists, aligning with the goal of reducing the carbon footprint.
