This forestry activity initiative aims to promote the ancient charcoal maker's trade and reinforce the sustainable management of the Pyrenees forests, diversifying the commercialization already carried out by the entity with wood chips and firewood.
The charcoal kiln was developed at the Montferrer shed and was active for four days, from Wednesday to Saturday, resulting in the production of about 340 kg of vegetable charcoal. For its preparation, three and a half tons of local oak were used, achieving a good yield despite the heavy rain and snow that coincided with the process.
The method used was the traditional style, placing the wood in a conical shape with a central hole for the chimney. After covering the structure with straw and earth to prevent oxygen entry, it was lit on Wednesday morning and constantly monitored until it was extinguished on Saturday, when the final product was extracted.
The charcoal from Alt Urgell, which is currently drying to ensure maximum quality, is characterized by its high calorific value. This lack of moisture allows it to reach higher temperatures, produce less smoke and residue, and burn longer than other heat sources.
