The Oliana and Rialb reservoirs in the Segre river basin began opening their floodgates this February 13 after exceeding 92% of their total storage capacity.

According to the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE), the Oliana dam has activated its spillway to release 31 cubic meters per second. Additionally, Endesa is releasing 55 cubic meters per second through its hydroelectric turbines.
This management strategy aims to control rising water levels caused by recent rainfall and snowmelt in the Pyrenees valleys. Downstream, the Rialb reservoir has also opened its bottom outlets to discharge 66 cubic meters per second.
The increased flow is already affecting river levels in Balaguer and Lleida. Meanwhile, water is being diverted to the Segarra-Garrigues canal to fill the Albagès reservoir, which currently holds 14 cubic hectometers.
