The construction of this roundabout, located at kilometer point 230.7 of the N-260, represents an investment of 729,630 euros by the Ministry of Transport. The works are expected to last between five and six months, a period during which traffic disruptions are anticipated. This project has been a long-standing demand from the local community.
Several authorities attended the start of the preliminary works, including José Crespín, sub-delegate of the Government in Lleida; Carlota Vilanova, head of the State Road Unit in Lleida; and Albert Marquet, mayor of Montferrer i Castellbò. The municipality had already informed residents about the start of the works through a public announcement.
“"To improve safety conditions at this point, both for drivers and pedestrians, considering that the junction is widely used to access the population centers of Montferrer i Castellbò, Aravell and Bellestar, and the Balcó del Pirineu urbanization, as well as the Andorra-La Seu airport facilities."
The roundabout, which will have a diameter of 15 meters, two lanes, and pedestrian crossings on all four sides, is crucial for road safety. According to data from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the average daily traffic intensity on this section of the N-260 is approximately 15,600 vehicles, with 92.64% being cars and 7.36% trucks.
The project, initiated in 2019, has faced several setbacks, such as the halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and a deserted tender in 2022 due to price increases stemming from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These factors necessitated a price update and an increase in investment of almost 30%. The new tender was launched in October 2024, and the contract was awarded in early September of last year, with the start of works postponed to avoid winter conditions.
