Around seventy healthcare professionals participated in the first FLS Anoia Update Conference, held at the Hospital Universitari d'Igualada, to enhance coordination and prevention of fragility fractures.

The 1st FLS Anoia Update Conference (Fracture Liaison Service Anoia) took place last Friday, September 25th, at the Hospital Universitari d'Igualada. The event, organized by the Consorci Sanitari de l'Anoia (CSA) with the collaboration of the Institut Català de la Salut Anoia and the Fundació Sanitària Sant Josep, gathered approximately seventy professionals.
The main objective of the meeting was to update knowledge and strengthen coordination among different care levels: hospital, intermediate, and primary care. The aim is to improve the prevention of new fractures related to bone fragility.
“

"This first conference has allowed us to update and showcase the work we do across different care levels and reinforce a shared model for managing patients with fragility fractures. Coordination between primary, hospital, and intermediate care is key to identifying at-risk patients, ensuring appropriate treatment and follow-up, and, above all, preventing new fractures and falls."

Dr. Dolors Grados · Co-coordinator of FLS Anoia and Head of the Rheumatology Department at Consorci Sanitari de l'Anoia
The conference began at 9 AM with institutional welcomes. Speakers included Ignasi Riera, manager of the CSA; Carme Riera, deputy mayor of the Igualada City Council; Teresa Sabater, sector director of the Penedès Health Region; Xavier Surís, co-director of the Master Plan for Rheumatic Diseases and the Musculoskeletal System; and Christian Alvarado and Dolors Grados, conference coordinators.
The inaugural session was led by Dr. Enric Duaso, a specialist in internal medicine and geriatrics, who explained the clinical foundations and healthcare value of the FLS model, focused on detecting individuals who have suffered a fragility fracture and preventing subsequent ones.
The first panel discussion focused on patient detection and risk assessment for further fractures. Dr. Andrés Gamboa presented clinical criteria and support tools, while Dr. Noelia Villa explained how to identify patients from primary care settings and refer them to the FLS pathway.
Subsequently, the treatment of osteoporosis following a fracture was discussed. Dr. Dolors Grados presented therapeutic strategies for high- or very high-risk patients, and Dr. Christian Alvarado emphasized the need to adapt treatment for elderly, frail, or multi-morbid individuals.
Shared patient follow-up among different care levels was another topic addressed. Dr. Maria José García discussed longitudinal follow-up from Primary Care, and Sandra Corcobado spoke about nursing monitoring, adherence, and incident detection.
The conference also featured a presentation by dentist Eva Marcè on oral health, focusing on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.
The ten-year trajectory of the School for Fracture and Fall Prevention (EPFIC) was presented, highlighting therapeutic exercise, environmental adaptation, and nutrition. Participants included Laia Dalmases, Cristina Muñoz, and Geni Noguera from the Fundació Sanitària Sant Josep d'Igualada.
The session concluded with the debate of a clinical case by several professionals and Dr. Antoni López, fostering a shared approach to comprehensive patient care.
The closing remarks were delivered by the FLS Anoia coordination team and the healthcare directors of FSSJ, Dr. Dolors Balaguer, and CSA, Dr. Jordi Monedero, who underscored the significance of this first update and the coordination among the three care levels.
