The Igualada City Council has reviewed its actions regarding the use of electric scooters, announcing a new control campaign in conjunction with the Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT). To date, the Local Police have registered 373 fines against Personal Mobility Vehicle (PMV) drivers and 23 against cyclists for various infractions.
This figure represents an increase compared to the previous year, which Councilor for Governance, Carlota Carner, highlighted as evidence of the municipal commitment to correcting uncivil behavior. The new campaign, starting on October 5th, will reinforce compliance with state regulations, including the mandatory use of helmets and a minimum driving age of 15 years for PMVs.
Routine controls by the Local Police will continue to monitor aspects such as the prohibition of riding on sidewalks, carrying two people on one vehicle, using headphones or music headsets, and ensuring proper documentation, including registration and mandatory insurance. So far, 111 fines have been issued for lack of civil liability insurance.
Carlota Carner emphasized that ensuring the proper use of these vehicles is an absolute priority to protect both users and pedestrians. She recalled the prior efforts in information and education, including training sessions in local high schools, and thanked the Local Police for their work in this complex area.
