The mayor of Aran, Maria Vergés, has written to ministers Fernando Grande-Marlaska and Óscar Puente, urging maximum speed in improving the N-230 and enhancing the safety of this route, considered one of the most dangerous in Spain.
The Conselh Generau d’Aran highlights growing social concern in the Val d'Aran and Ribagorza regions due to the lack of visible progress on the infrastructure and the high volume of daily heavy goods traffic. The N-230 is the main land connection to France and the rest of Spain, but its current layout is insufficient for hundreds of daily trucks, increasing accident risks.
The situation is unsustainable. Thousands of people use this road daily, and we cannot risk serious accidents without effective and immediate measures being taken.
The Aran executive has requested increased controls during peak traffic periods and greater vigilance over compliance with circulation restrictions for heavy vehicles during the winter season, a plea made since 2019 to the DGT and the Servei Català de Trànsit.
Furthermore, the need to accelerate the N-230's adaptation and improvement projects has been reiterated to the Ministry of Transport, a long-standing demand shared by the Val d'Aran and the Catalan and Aragonese Ribagorza territories. The Aran government believes the improvements can no longer be postponed to ensure the safety of thousands of citizens and strategic communications with France.
