The Parliament of Catalonia passed a Bill on February 25 recognizing the singularity of Aran, receiving 109 votes in favor to strengthen the region's unique political status.

The initiative, proposed by the Aran government and backed by most parliamentary groups, ensures that the Conselh Generau d'Aran is no longer legally treated as a standard local municipality. This move aligns with the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia and the specific laws governing the Aran Valley.
By amending the Local Government Law of Catalonia, the new text establishes that general local regulations will only apply to Aran when specific regional laws are absent. This protects Aran's internal organization and its capacity to manage its own budget and services.

"Today is a historic day for Aran because we have taken a definitive step so that the recognition of Aranese singularity is, truly and in practice, useful for our citizens."

Maria Vergés · Síndica of Aran
The Síndica of Aran, Maria Vergés, highlighted that treating the institution as a local entity had caused issues in managing healthcare and social services. The new legal framework acknowledges that Aran's self-government is political in nature, rather than just administrative.
