After two decades leading the contest, which premiered in 1990, Jorge Fernández maintains a very active routine. A graduate in Physical Education and a former basketball player, sports are a fundamental part of his life, currently focusing on cycling and skiing after a serious knee injury.
His preferred destination for the snow season is the region of the Vall d'Aran, as shown on his social media, often accompanied by his dog Mika. This area of the Catalan Pyrenees stands out for its unique identity, featuring Aranese, a variant of Occitan, as a co-official language.
The Vall d’Aran is an enclave with a great personality, possessing its own language, institutions, and a geography that sets it apart from its entire surroundings.
The capital of the region is Vielha, a hub that combines modern life with an old town dedicated to commerce specializing in mountain sports. Furthermore, three of its towns —Garòs, Bagergue, and Arties— are included in the official list of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
One of the main attractions of the area, and the reason Fernández spends the winter there, is the Baqueira Beret ski resort. With over 60 years of history, this resort has established itself as one of the most recognized in Europe, attracting thousands of visitors every season.
