Snowfall revives demand for the Bonaigua Tunnel between Pallars Sobirà and Val d'Aran

Mayors from Sobirà insist the tunnel is the only solution to winter isolation, while Vielha prioritizes the N-230 improvement.

The closure of the Port de la Bonaigua due to heavy snowfall has reactivated the historical demand by Pallars Sobirà mayors to build a tunnel improving the road connection with the Val d'Aran.

The closure of the C-28 road due to snow and avalanche risk has once again highlighted the communication difficulties between the two Pyrenean regions, forcing workers to take detours of up to three hours. The mayor of Llavorsí, Josep Vidal, was one of the firmest defenders of the infrastructure, calling it an “evident necessity”.

"We have to go towards La Pobla de Segur and take Perves, where you can also find a lot of snow because it is quite a high pass and we always have problems."

Josep Vidal · Mayor of Llavorsí
Vidal pointed out that current alternative routes, such as the Perves or Cantó passes, are complicated and dangerous journeys, especially during intense snowfall. For his part, the mayor of Sort, Baldo Farré, supported the initiative, emphasizing the importance of weaving the best possible road network in the Alt Pirineu and Aran.
Although Val d'Aran does not oppose the project, the mayor of Vielha, Juan Antonio Serrano, clarified that they have other priorities. From Sobirà, however, there is a perception that the other side of the mountain lacks the same commitment to avoid a potential increase in truck traffic, although Serrano doubts the impact on heavy vehicles would be that significant.

"We agree with anything that improves infrastructure, but we prioritize the improvement of the N-230, which is also in a very complicated situation."

Juan Antonio Serrano · Mayor of Vielha
This demand has historical context. In 2019, the territory secured a commitment from the then president of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, to prepare an informative study for the construction of the Bonaigua tunnel.
