The event, which will bring together military personnel from more than twenty countries, would become the first championship of its kind organized in the entire Spanish state. Last week, the Vielha e Mijaran council hosted a key preparatory meeting with representatives of the Armed Forces, a meeting that was subsequently confirmed by the city council itself through its social media channels.
The mayor of Vielha, Juan Antonio Serrano, detailed that conversations with the Spanish Army to bring the championship to the Val d'Aran began more than a year ago. The competition will require the use of the facilities at Baqueira Beret, a resort with extensive experience in hosting high-level skiing events.
Although the competitions will take place on the slopes, the Aranese capital, Vielha, will play a crucial role in organizing the protocolary events. The city is expected to host the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the awards presentations for the competition.
The Military Ski World Championship, organized by the International Military Sports Council (CISM), lasts six days, with three dedicated to competition in various winter disciplines. This event revives the strong historical relationship between the military and skiing in Aran, as the Army Ski and Climbing Company had its barracks in Vielha from 1963 until 2000.
