The Vielha e Mijaran City Council has received official authorization from the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) to carry out essential maintenance work on the Garona riverbed.

The intervention will cover nearly 3,000 meters through the towns of Vielha and Betren. These areas are identified as high-risk zones for flooding, similar to the events of 2013 when the river overflowed, causing significant local damage.
Planned works involve removing invasive brambles, clearing riverbanks, and extracting large dead trees. Special attention will be given to clearing sediment from under bridges to ensure water can flow freely during periods of heavy rainfall.

"Acting now means avoiding major damage to homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land in the future."

Juan Antonio Serrano · Mayor of Vielha e Mijaran
The project includes a section within the Natura 2000 protected area and will be implemented over several years. The municipality is now preparing the bidding process for these critical safety works.
