The Vielha e Mijaran Town Council has launched a pilot project this February by installing five smart bins in the commercial heart of Vielha to enhance urban cleanliness.

These units are powered by solar energy and feature an internal compaction system that significantly reduces the volume of deposited waste. This technology increases the effective capacity of each bin, leading to a lower frequency of collection trips by municipal services.
Equipped with specialized sensors, the bins monitor fill levels and send alerts to cleaning crews when they are nearly full. This allows for better planning of waste removal, prioritizing high-traffic areas within the Val d'Aran region during peak tourist seasons.

"The bins are designed for small waste items and not for domestic household garbage."

In addition to technical efficiency, the project aims to improve the town's visual appeal through customizable bin exteriors. Local authorities remind residents that these smart bins are intended for small items like papers or cigarette butts, rather than household trash bags.
