The Muleteers' Festival (Festa dels Traginers) in Balsareny (Bages) celebrated its 84th edition this weekend with an "extraordinary" presence of youth and children, guaranteeing the tradition's future.

The historical parade narrator, Jacint Orriols, who has participated for fifty years, recalled the deep meaning of the celebration, noting that Balsareny was always a stopping point for muleteers. The central Sunday event began with the blessing of the animals by the priest Antoni Quesada, followed by the giants and the mule Merlet.

"We are very happy because the participation of young people, boys and girls, has been extraordinary."

The cavalcade featured 22 adult muleteers and 11 young ones, who paraded along the Moià road with carriages loaded with traditional products. The parade included the representation of a wedding involving the flag bearer Xavier Casaldàliga and the couple Laura Herrera Vall and Xavi Vall.
This year, the distinction of Honorary Muleteer (Traginer d’Honor), awarded biennially since 2011, went to Josep Arnau i Tomàs. Furthermore, Marc Rabeya, from the organization, highlighted the uniqueness of pack loads (càrregues amb bast), a technique used to transport goods where carts could not reach.
The festival expanded its offerings with the Muleteer Market, which for the first time was held throughout the weekend (Saturday and Sunday). The celebration also had a strong international flavor with guests from France and Redouane Ennouni, a farrier from Waterloo, who received a recognition plaque.
