The Urology Service at the Althaia Foundation in Manresa has introduced a pioneering technology this February that uses water vapor to reduce prostate volume in an outpatient setting.

This innovative method, known as Rezum, represents a major step forward for patients suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia. The procedure involves injecting water vapor to dissolve the cells obstructing the urethra, improving urinary flow without aggressive surgery.
Previously, the hospital in Bages offered conventional surgery and laser treatments. The Rezum system provides a middle ground between medication and traditional surgery, specifically effective for mild to moderate cases while minimizing sexual side effects.
Medical staff trained at the Puigvert Foundation to master this technique. Althaia expects to perform around 80 procedures annually using this system, adding to the 400 prostate-related surgeries already conducted each year at the facility.
