The decision, announced by acting president Albert Dalmau, means that no new trains will depart from stations until safety can be guaranteed. Trains currently in circulation will complete their journey and terminate service upon reaching their destination. This drastic measure follows a morning characterized by great confusion among users.
“"The Government cannot put the citizens at risk. We are absolutely focused on working jointly with the Ministry for the resumption of the service, but circulation will not resume until we have all the guarantees that mobility can be safe."
The Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, detailed the emergency measures, including the activation of 170 additional buses for as long as necessary on the main corridors, increased frequencies in other transport options, and the temporary suspension of Low Emission Zones. Furthermore, the Government demands free Rodalies service until the resumption is reliable and sustained over time.
The crisis escalated on Friday with a new landslide on the R1 line between Tordera and Maçanet. The train drivers' union, Semaf, demanded that the Garraf tunnels (R2 Sud) and the section between Badalona and Montgat (R1) be added to the safety review, leading to the suspension of these sections and increasing confusion before the final decision for total suspension.
Despite the demanded suspension, Renfe had attempted to maintain a partial service during the morning, arguing that it was better than offering no mobility at all. Spokesperson Antonio Carmona emphasized the joint interest of the Government, Adif, and Renfe in recovering citizen confidence, following an urgent meeting at the Ministry of Territory.
