An R4 Rodalies commuter train heading to Manresa derailed in Gelida late Tuesday night, resulting in the death of a trainee driver and injuring 41 people.

The incident occurred shortly before nine in the evening on Tuesday, when the train, which had departed from Sant Vicenç de Calders, struck a retaining wall that had collapsed onto the track due to intense rainfall. The cab was occupied by the main driver and three people undergoing training.
The final casualty report from the Servei d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), updated Wednesday morning, confirms the death of a 27-year-old trainee driver, originally from Seville. Additionally, 41 people were injured: five seriously, six less seriously, and 30 lightly, who were transferred to hospitals including Bellvitge, Vall d'Hebron, and Mútua de Terrassa.

"Consternated by the Gelida accident. Condolences to the driver's family and all Renfe staff. A black day for the railway network in Catalonia."

Following the accident, Adif suspended rail traffic across the entire Rodalies de Catalunya network until infrastructure safety could be guaranteed. The Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, emphasized that safety is the “superior” principle guiding the decision for the total shutdown.
This marks the third serious incident registered on the network in a single day due to the storm. The event is reminiscent of the Vacarisses accident in 2018, also on the R4 line, where one person died due to a rock slide.
