FC Barcelona formally announced this Saturday its withdrawal from the European Super League project, led by Florentino Pérez, a move finalized by Joan Laporta ahead of his scheduled resignation.

This decision occurs just two days before Joan Laporta resigns as club president to run for re-election on March 15. Curiously, the club initially joined the Super League on October 27, 2020, just before the resignation of the previous president, Josep Maria Bartomeu.

"FC Barcelona informs that today it has formally notified the European Super League Company and the clubs that have been part of it of its disassociation from the European Super League project."

The split with Real Madrid, which now remains the only founding club, has accelerated this season. A key gesture was Laporta's attendance at the general assembly of the European Club Association in October, chaired by Nasser al-Khelaïfi, the head of Paris Saint-Germain and a UEFA ally.
Reasons for the withdrawal include the failure of the entity's foundation, strong opposition from fans, and threats of sanctions from UEFA. Furthermore, the European body has reformed the Champions League to meet the financial needs of the major clubs, which Barça considers sufficient after nearly five years without progress in the Super League model.
One of the final reasons distancing Laporta from Florentino Pérez is the role Real Madrid plays in the Negreira Case. The outgoing president voiced his discomfort during a Christmas dinner regarding the white club president's influence on certain media outlets, conclusively sealing the position of the Catalan club.
