Gil Lleonart Riera, last director of Manresa's Fàbrica Nova, dies at 90

Textile engineer Gil Lleonart Riera, born in Pont de Cabrianes, has died at the age of 90 in Manresa, remembered as the last director of the iconic Fàbrica Nova.

The professional, born on March 24, 1935, completed his secondary studies at the Lluís de Peguera institute in Manresa and trained as a textile industrial expert at the School of Industrial Engineers in Terrassa between 1951 and 1957. His professional career began in 1958 at the company Tèxtils Bertrand Serra, where he became general manager in 1976.
That same year, 1976, Lleonart took over the management of the Fàbrica Nova de Manresa, one of the main textile factories in the country and the scene of the first major strike of the Franco era in 1946. He navigated the difficult final phase of the company until its definitive closure in 1989. Subsequently, he managed Acabados Pirineos in Ribes de Freser until his retirement in 2000.

His figure is remembered for his professional commitment, leadership, and connection with the industrial and social fabric of the territory.

Parallel to his industrial career, Gil Lleonart maintained an active involvement in the social and educational life of Manresa. He served as president of the AMPA (Parents' Association) of the Lluís de Peguera institute in 1977 and 1978, and directed the textile economat between 1977 and 1991.
The farewell ceremony will take place this Friday at 12 noon at the Mèmora funeral home in Pont Nou, Manresa. The wake began yesterday afternoon and will continue until the start of the funeral.
