The town of Súria held a historical memory event yesterday to honor three local women who endured the Spanish Civil War and subsequent Francoist repression.

The conference highlighted the life of Nieves Barredo, the only woman from Súria to join the militia on the Aragon front in 1936. It also remembered Carme Romeu, a teacher and school inspector who was stripped of her rights by the regime.

"We want to honor these three women who represent many others who were silenced and punished by Francoism."

The event concluded with the story of Teresa Sivila, whose father was executed in 1939. Her private diary, discovered after her death in 2010, provides a rare testimony of the arrival of fascist troops in the region.
