The city of Manresa mourns the loss of Lluís Amat Gómez, born in 1949, who was one of the most beloved players at the now-defunct Pista Castell. Amat became one of the pillars of the CB Manresa first team after progressing through the youth ranks.
His debut in the top Spanish basketball competition came after the promotion achieved in the 1971/72 season. During the 1972/73 campaign, in the First Division, he was coached by Lluís Maria Planas and shared the locker room with figures such as Holgado, Franquesa, González, Torrents, and the Mesas brothers.
“"He was a pivot just over two meters tall, corpulent and very smart playing, with good vision and a great hand for shooting. And he did not go unnoticed, also with his dose of character."
Despite the club's relegation at the end of the 1972/73 season, Amat continued playing for CB Manresa in the Second Division, where he played alongside the American Lee Palmer. After retiring from the court, he remained involved in basketball, coaching youth teams, including stints at ASFE de Sant Fruitós and Bàsquet Manresa.
The wake opens this Tuesday afternoon at the Nou Tanatori de Mémora in Manresa, and the farewell ceremony will take place on January 15 at 11 am at the same funeral home.
