The Cambrils City Council has honored Antonio Virgili Solé and Xavier Figuerola Gorga, two victims from Cambrils of the Nazi extermination camps, in a moving ceremony that is part of the 20th Autumn Memory Cycle.

The event, presided over by Mayor Oliver Klein, took place on Saturday, October 17th, in the Council Chamber and was attended by relatives of the deportees. During the commemoration, official donations of original documentation were made to the Cambrils Municipal Archive by representatives of both families.
Claude Virgili, son of Antonio Virgili Solé, donated photographs and the transcription of a personal diary from the Mauthausen camp, discovered after his father's death in 1995. Antonio Virgili Solé survived internment and rebuilt his life in France.
For her part, Mercè Mantilla Figuerola, niece of Xavier Figuerola Gorga, who was murdered in the camp in 1941, donated photographs and documentation preserved by the family. Both Claude Virgili and Mercè Mantilla received a commemorative plaque from the mayor.
Subsequently, the exhibition “Feixisme mai més. Del Baix Camp als camps d’extermini nazis” (Fascism Never Again. From Baix Camp to the Nazi extermination camps) was inaugurated at the Molí de les Tres Eres Museum, produced by the Reus Archive. The exhibition, which can be seen until November 8th with free access, recovers the memory of 35 individuals from Baix Camp who suffered in the Nazi camps.
This traveling exhibition incorporates documentation donated by the families of the Cambrils deportees. The lecture “Memòria contra la desmemòria: cambrilencs deportats als camps de concentració” (Memory against forgetfulness: Cambrils residents deported to concentration camps), by historians Joan Navais Icart and Axel Baiget Morreres, will be presented tomorrow, Tuesday, at 7:30 PM in the Cultural Center.
