The incident took place when the Llançada float, which includes the image of the Sant Crist de la Creu, was returning to the Sant Joan Baptista parish after the procession. According to Anna Maria Martí, vice-president of the Archconfraternity of the Sant Crist de la Creu, the image got caught on a telephone cable in Morlius square, causing it to fall to the ground and break.
“"It was horrifying. We are heartbroken."
The Guàrdia Urbana documented the event and accompanied the officials to the parish. The image, highly revered in the city and central to the Good Friday Processional Way of the Cross, lost its limbs and the cross broke. The Archconfraternity and the parish, with the support of rector Joan Miquel de Rivas, have already begun efforts to assess the damage and find potential restorers.
The original creators of the float are from Olot, and finding the original mold is considered a difficult task. Nevertheless, the primary goal is to restore the image to its original state. Once the assessment is complete, funding sources will be sought to cover the restoration costs, with the aim of preserving the image as it was.
The Association of Holy Week Associations of Reus has expressed its unconditional support to the Archconfraternity and the Sant Joan Baptista parish, offering assistance and advice during these difficult times. The community hopes that the Sant Crist de la Creu can be restored and venerated again on September 14, coinciding with the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
