Aigües de Reus has awarded the works to renew 500 meters of the water supply network in Escultor Rocamora street, aiming to improve supply efficiency and eliminate asbestos cement pipes.

The company has planned a two-month operation, set to begin in mid-September. These tasks will be carried out before the redevelopment of the same street, included in the City Council's Reus Sud Neighborhood Plan. The goal is to minimize inconvenience for residents and avoid further intervention on the road once its transformation is complete.
A primary objective is the removal of old asbestos cement pipes, which will be replaced with new ones. This action is part of Aigües de Reus's investment plans to progressively eliminate asbestos cement in drinking water pipelines, adhering to European guidelines on asbestos removal from public infrastructure.
The project has a budget of 266,192.62 euros. The European Union co-finances 40% through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under the Integrated Action Plan of the Local Integrated Development Strategy (EDIL). The remaining 60% will be covered by the Reus City Council.
According to Daniel Rubio, the councilor responsible for the service, coordination between network renewal works and urban development projects is crucial. "The City Council and Aigües de Reus always work in coordination," he stated, noting that leveraging redevelopment works allows for simultaneous action on various infrastructures.
This planning aims to minimize disruptions for citizens, as Rubio emphasizes: "The objective is to serve the public with the least possible inconvenience." The renewal also aligns with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Municipal Action Plan 2023-2027, which prioritizes ensuring the city's water supply and quality.
The works are expected to conclude before the end of the year, allowing the street's redevelopment to commence afterward. This initiative will not incur any direct additional costs for the affected residents.
