The Reus City Council has launched the process to establish a new climate shelter at Escola Rosa Sensat, which will become the sixth educational center in the city with this infrastructure.

This initiative involves commissioning the drafting of a project to renaturalize the school's playground, which currently features extensive hard surfaces and a lack of green spaces. This configuration limits play options, reduces biodiversity, and increases exposure to high temperatures, especially during warmer months.
The transformation of the playground aims to create a healthier, more educational, and sustainable environment, aligning with current trends in environmental education and child well-being. The team responsible for the project will analyze the current state of the playground, which covers approximately 6,800 m², and identify necessary improvements in terms of climatic comfort, biodiversity, and pedagogical use.
The renaturalization proposal will include the incorporation of vegetation, shaded areas, natural play spaces, calm zones, and elements that encourage diversified play and outdoor learning. The estimated budget for the future works is 272,000 euros, while the project's drafting has a maximum cost of 13,647.49 euros and a two-month deadline.
With this new project, Escola Rosa Sensat joins other educational centers in Reus that already have climate shelters. So far, the City Council has inaugurated four such spaces as part of the RENATUReus project for urban renaturalization at Pompeu Fabra, Marià Fortuny, General Prim, and Teresa Miquel i Pàmies schools. Additionally, the project for Escola Eduard Toda is currently in the drafting phase.
