The Sant Joan de Reus University Hospital has coordinated the first two organ donations in the Tarragona region carried out within the framework of medical aid in dying.

A multidisciplinary team led by the Intensive Care Service managed both cases involving patients who requested euthanasia and expressed their wish to donate organs. This resulted in successful transplants for four recipients.

"Coordinating the donation process during medical aid in dying helps us transform a farewell into an opportunity for life for others."

Since the law came into effect in 2021, organ donation following euthanasia has become a consolidated ethical and safe path to increase organ availability in Catalonia.
