The municipality of Riudoms has unveiled an impressive life-size chocolate 'mona' of architect Antoni Gaudí, a 150-kilogram creation by master pastry chef Adan Saez, commemorating the centenary of the artist's death.

The sculpture, which was revealed on Sunday in the Plaça de l'Església before dozens of residents, is part of the activities for Gaudí Year, promoted by the Riudoms City Council. After its public presentation, the figure has been moved to the entrance of the Teatre Auditori del Casal Riudomenc, where it will remain on display until April 11.

"The idea is to give a popular touch to Gaudí Year, and what better way than a Catalan tradition like the Easter Mona and a chocolate figure."

Pastry chef Adan Saez received the commission from the City Council and used as a base a mold from Joan Serramià's sculpture of the modernist architect, which is exhibited in the same square. Using this mold for the upper part, Saez recreated the rest of the figure's body, which was then covered with an edible bronze layer to mimic the appearance of a real sculpture. The base of the 'mona' incorporates a 'trencadís' (mosaic) made with white chocolate and colorants.
Although the initial intention was to depict Gaudí standing, logistical difficulties for its transport led to it being presented seated in a chair. During its exhibition in the square, the figure was accompanied by reproductions of the Sagrada Família towers made of meringue and hazelnuts, elements that have been part of Saez's pastry shop window for years. The creation of the artwork required a month of dedication.
During the placement process of the 'mona', a minor incident occurred: an accidental bump caused a finger on the figure's right hand to break. This finger was holding a small reproduction of the Sagrada Família, which crumbled upon falling. However, the finger was quickly repaired by Saez, who reattached it by melting some chocolate with the help of a lighter.
The celebration of Gaudí Year in Riudoms will culminate on April 11 with a 'trencadissa popular' (popular breaking), where the chocolate from the 'mona' will be distributed among all attendees, providing a sweet end to this commemorative initiative.
