The mecanicobiological treatment plant for the residual fraction at the Baix Camp Waste Management Centre has increased its treatment capacity by 31% with the implementation of a second pre-treatment line. The expansion works, involving an investment of 8.6 million euros, are practically completed and ready for performance testing.
The new line will allow for the pre-treatment of 110,000 tons annually, up from the previous 84,079 tons. In addition to increasing the quantity of residual fraction treated, the new line will improve sorting with more efficient and safer equipment, reducing necessary maintenance and cleaning downtime. The existing pre-treatment line has been operational since the mecanicobiological plant's inauguration in 2009.
The launch of the new pre-treatment line is complemented by the construction of a rejection management facility, awarded for almost 1.7 million euros, which is also nearing completion. This enclosed facility will reduce material movement and improve logistics and management, as its enclosed nature will prevent material dispersion due to wind.
The mecanicobiological plant in Baix Camp sorts the residual fraction using manual and mechanical systems to recover valuable materials such as paper, glass, metals, and plastics. The organic matter from the residual fraction passes through digesters, where the biogas released from its treatment is used to produce electrical energy. After anaerobic treatment, the resulting product undergoes a maturation process to obtain a bio-stabilized material used particularly in public works or site restoration.
The plant serves all municipalities in Baix Camp (except Reus and Cambrils), Alt Camp (except Valls), and Baix Penedès (except Cunit).
