Following the Lenten period and a Palm Sunday marked by devotion in local parishes, the city of Reus experienced one of the first central events of its Holy Week yesterday. At 5 PM, the Parish of Sant Joan Baptista served as a meeting point for numerous faithful awaiting the departure of the Holy Christ of the Cross.
The procession, led by the band of the Confraria de Sant Tomàs d'Aquino and guarded by the Armats de la Reial Congregació de la Puríssima Sang, began the transfer of the image. The route took the entourage along Prat de la Riba Avenue, the Central Market, President Companys Avenue, and Sant Joan Street, finally reaching Nen de les Oques Square and, ultimately, the entrance to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
Upon arrival at the residence, the image of the Holy Christ of the Cross was raised as nearly 200 people joined the Way of the Cross that wound through the gardens. During the event, readings and hymns were performed, inviting attendees to reflection and to remember those most in need. Once the Way of the Cross concluded, the procession retraced its steps to return the image to the Parish of Sant Joan Baptista.
Palm Sunday has only been the beginning of a Holy Week full of events in Reus. Today, Holy Monday, features the Solemn Procession of Compassion and Mercy, which will start from two locations: the Dance of Death at 7 PM from the Headquarters of the Brotherhood of Sant Isidre and Santa Llúcia, and the entourage of the Holy Christ of Mercy at 8 PM from the Parish of Sant Joan.
